Chitting Potatoes

Chitting is a process where seed potatoes are allowed to sprout prior to being planted to encourage faster growth and heavier crops.

First Early

  • These are generally best if you want to grow small new potatoes.
  • Plant from the end of February to late May.
  • First early potatoes are ready to harvest approximately 10 weeks from the planting date.
  • Ideal for growing in bags and containers.
  • First early potatoes will benefit from chitting prior to planting.

First early potatoes usually available at Langlands

2.25kg Bags: Arron Pilot, Home Guard, Lady Christl, Maris Bard, Pentland Javelin, Rocket, Sharps Express.

Bag of 10: Pentland Javelin, Red Duke Of York, Vales Emerald, Duke Of York, Sharpes Express, Rocket, Casablanca, Foremost, Premiere

Second Early

  • These are generally best if you want to grow small new potatoes.
  • Plant from March to late May.
  • Second early potatoes are ready to harvest approximately 13 weeks from the planting date.
  • Ideal for growing in bags and containers.
  • Second early potatoes will benefit from chitting prior to planting.

Bag of 10: Bonnie, Nicola, Saxon, Maris Peer, Carlingford, Charlotte

Main Crop

  • Main crop potatoes tend to produce larger potatoes that are ideal for baking and roasting.
  • Plant from March to mid May.
  • Main crop potatoes are ready to harvest approximately 20 weeks from the planting date.
  • Best grown in the ground where there is more room to grow but they can be grown in bags and containers.
  • Main crop potatoes will benefit from chitting prior to planting.
