Potato Varieties & Types

Chitting is a process where seed potatoes are allowed to sprout prior to being planted to encourage faster growth and heavier crops.

First Early

• These are generally best if you want to grow small new potatoes.
• Plant from the end of February to late May.
• First early potatoes are ready to harvest approximately 10 weeks from the planting date.
• Ideal for growing in bags and containers.
• First early potatoes will benefit from chitting prior to planting.

• These are generally best if you want to grow small new potatoes.

Main Crop

• Main crop potatoes tend to produce larger potatoes that are ideal for baking and roasting.
• Plant from March to mid May.
• Main crop potatoes are ready to harvest approximately 20 weeks from the planting date.
• Best grown in the ground where there is more room to grow but they can be grown in bags and containers.
• Main crop potatoes will benefit from chitting prior to planting.
